Cage Of Iron satirises war films. The stereotypical characters include the incredibly stupid hero, the beastly Nazi, the beautiful English woman spy masquerading as a German naval officer, and the bumbling Admiralty controller. Even the ship's cat is a shadowy figure of mystery. The action takes place in the command headquarters of the Royal Navy and the Kriegsmarine, but principally and violently on board U999. The adventures of U999 are portrayed with humour and drama, its protagonists unflinching in perilous situations, as she miraculously survives the war until the last day, when a happy ending turns to tragedy, illustrating the short span of heroism.
