The Austrian-born author traces the exiting history of the rediscovery of the Borobudur complex. As an architect he pays particular attention to its design and symbolism within the historical context of the schools of Buddhism. This book includes a summary description of all the panels that have been as far identified. The 3rd edition includes the new summary regarding the conceptualization for the monument of the former edition, accompanied by a newly formatted table, 253 revised or expanded notes (summarized as final scores) and an extended bibliography updated to include publisher information. However, any closing evaluation regarding the symbolism of the monument is up to the student, the reader. The colors in many of the illustrations have been slightly adjusted.
