In Black Power! White Power! The Rise of Cooperative Nationalism, criminal justice scholar George Michael traces an emerging and unlikely alliance: the growing convergence between black nationalist and white nationalist movements in America. Across fifteen chapters, Michael moves from the historical roots of black separatism in Marcus Garvey's Back to Africa movement and the accommodationism of Booker T. Washington, through the Nation of Islam and the Black Panthers, into the shared ideological ground both camps have staked out around Afrocentrism and Ariosophy, black Nazism, and black conservatism.
The book's second half turns to the contemporary landscape: the transformation of white nationalism from Klan-era supremacism into the alt-right, Enrique Tarrio's leadership of the Proud Boys, and the role of podcasting in opening direct dialogue between black and white nationalist figures. Michael examines the public controversies of Kanye West and Candace Owens as flashpoints for this convergence, profiles the 2023 "In Black and White" collaboration between African nationalist Ayo Kimathi and white far-right activist David Gahary, and situates the American story within Alexander Dugin's Eurasianist movement, which seeks to unite nationalists of every stripe against a common adversary.
Michael is a professor of criminal justice at Westfield State University and the author of five previous books on political extremism, including The Enemy of My Enemy, Theology of Hate, and Willis Carto and the American Far Right, and editor of Extremism in America. Drawing on that research record, he argues that shifting racial demographics, rising antisemitism, and the fracturing of the American left-right divide are producing common cause between movements long assumed to be permanent enemies — a realignment with consequences for how extremism itself is studied and countered.
