Bettina Hauke's (b. Duisburg, 1968; lives and works in Berlin and Oldenburg) art is richly colorful, sophisticated in its construction, enigmatic. What seems playful, surreal, or fabulous turns out to be precisely thought through. Hauke's figures appear confident, gazing, holding objects without explaining their meaning. Therein lies the power of this painting: it supplants message with constellation, definitude with a tentative gaze. In today's age of accelerated image circulation, Hauke emphasizes focused attention. Before the Metamorphosis explores her work from two complementary perspectives with essays by Larissa Kikol and Axel Ruoff, turning the spotlight on a body of painting that examines historical visual dispensations and develops its own distinctive language from them.
