The Atlas of Irish Sport is a landmark publication which will appeal to a broad readership interested in sport, sports history and indeed the history of Ireland and its people both at home and abroad. Sport has been central to the Irish imagination and Irish culture over many centuries. To write the history of Ireland and treat sport as incidental is to miss how significant it has been in the life of so many of its people. With over eighty contributors and hundreds of illustrations including a series of highly revealing maps, this volume sets out to tell the story of Irish sport in all its richness, diversity and complexity. It reveals how the modern sporting landscape in Ireland has formed across the centuries by charting its evolution through periods of medieval upheaval, conquest, colonisation, Famine, Empire, rebellion, independence, partition and Civil War. Focusing on the people and places central to that narrative it delves deep into the wider geographical, cultural, social, economic, and political contexts in which the games emerged and the different and ofttimes contested trajectories that they have followed. Similar to previous atlas volumes it offers another original contribution to the history and indeed historical geography of modern Ireland.
