As if in a Distant Dream, by Mark Schardine, takes us on a journey through nature, fantasy, and everyday life, by experimentation of strict forms such as haiku and senryū. A poem written in one of these forms can be read in a short amount of time, but its few words can express a great variety of ideas. Mastering these forms creates an illusion of ease for the reader, but requires great insight and refinement from the writer. Not only will each reader react in a unique way, but each reading can offer a new perspective, new ways for the words to speak to us.
