Between the late ninth and early eleventh centuries, Byzantine expansion left deep traces in Armenian society and culture. Yet reception was never simply passive. Pantaleon, a cleric sent to negotiate with the soldier-emperors who drove that expansion, re-imagined the story he brought home about a hard-won relic into Armenia's traditions. Uxtanēs, a bishop in a Byzantine provincial city, watching fellow Armenians turn Chalcedonian, answered by projecting his community's enduring Miaphysite identity onto the distant past. Through little-studied colophons, hagiography and historiography, this book listens to the rich cultural voices that flourished under political pressure.
