Edinburgh professor Cris Beecham is perfectly content as a cantankerous loner. Then a rival discredits her work on dissociative disorders and she is compelled to defend it. It's all she has. Eleven-year-old Fin exists to protect Lee from their indifferent father, playground bullies and hunger. But Fin isn't a normal brother. And Lee isn't a normal boy. To Cris, it is the perfect case for her work. But when she is mistaken for a family friend, they relocate for the summer to her croft in Scotland's remote Orkney Islands.
