A Glimpse of Paradise is a major monograph on one of the most distinctive artists of our time – the American painter John Alexander (b.1945). While providing a survey of his entire decades-long career, it focuses in particular on the last twelve years.

A range of texts and high-quality reproductions illuminate Alexander’s profound connection to the natural world, a relationship forged in his childhood in the bayous and woods of East Texas, and enriched by his subsequent immersion in various traditions of landscape painting, from Monet to the Hudson River School painters. Also running though his work is a clear-eyed engagement with our current environmental peril.

The book features a foreword by gallerist John Berggruen; an introduction from Lorne Michaels; an essay by writer and academic Dr Matthew Holman; and a series of conversations between the artist and Adam Fisher, an author and journalist who specializes in long-form interview and oral history.
