A Couple Of California Points is a photographic journey between two of the most iconic surf breaks of Southern California, Malibu and Rincon, exploring an obsession for the figure and subtle gestures in surfing.

In 2017, after documenting the surf scene in New York in his book Ice Cream Headaches, photographer Julien Roubinet moved to Los Angeles and spent the next 6 years immersed in Southern California surf culture.

Featuring over 100 sun-drenched images, the work celebrates the enduring beauty of classic longboarding, capturing legends of the sport like Joel Tudor, Kassia Meador, Devon Howard but also local corelords and pilgrims alike. Intimate portraits of those drawn to the magnetic pull of the Pacific Coast Highways’ offerings come to punctuate this panorama.

The book is a modern record of surf culture anchored in the idyllic 60’s, that continues to thrive. This curated selection of surf images pays homage to a golden era captured by lensmen like Ron Stoner and Jeff Divine, whose photographs defined a generation.

A Couple Of California Points is a love letter to that stretch of coastline, that counterculture, once held up as myth, that never really faded.
