Major William Lauderdale commanded a detachment that built "Fort Lauderdale" during the Seminole Wars in the 1838. By 1842 the fort was abandoned and for the next 50 years the area remained completely undeveloped. Downtown Fort Lauderdale has a similar gaping hole in its heritage. The very first building constructed in town, at the landing of Frank Stranahan's ferry in 1893, still stands and several buildings associated with the town's pioneers are extant.
