When fourteen year old Valerie discovers that her mother is pregnant, she strongly opposes the pregnancy, feeling that her parents are too old to have more children. She eventually comes around and embraces her baby sister, Jenny, who is born with Down syndrome. After her parents are killed in a car accident, she decides to raise Jenny on her own.

Seventeen years later, Jenny's life is in peril. It is this event which brings about unexpected, supernatural circumstances. Divine intervention allows Valerie to realize her hidden desire; to experience a friendship with Jenny. The sisters develop a close bond; a bond which Valerie will discover they have always shared. The experience also allows Valerie to learn some life lessons about the person she is and the person she needs to be.
