Aprašymas

When Maha lived in Baghdad her family was wealthy and wanted for nothing. Now they live in Sydney and her Dad is working as a cleaner, they barely have enough money to make ends meet.

The one thing that makes her happy is playing netball, but her sneakers are way too small and hurt her feet. Her friend Talia sees her friend struggle and tells her mother she needs a new pair of sneakers...and gives them to Maha.

Maha hasn’t told her parents she’s attending Jewish scripture class, but there was no Islam scripture classes at her new school so she decides to join some new friends in the Jewish class. She loves it and the new friends she has made. Every day they meet on the rooftop to eat their morning tea and discuss what they are learning and also what is going on in their lives.

Set at Darlinghurst East Public School in Sydney, the story follows Mr Zulman’s Tuesday Jewish scripture classes and the profound effect they have on his four very different students.

As he explains the journey of Exodus to his students in Jewish scripture class they themselves go on a journey of learning, discovery, friendship and acceptance with the help of his caring and compassionate guidance.

Emma is a student in the class. She is tall, blue-eyed and excels academically. She is good at everything she does, including netball. Her parents go to the Uniting Church but she decided to go to Jewish scripture class because she wanted to learn about a new religion. She is shocked at some of the things she learns from Maha, Talia and Simon, because her own life is so happy and carefree.

Talia is from South Africa and is the only Jewish student in the class.
Her dyslexia means concentrating in class can be difficult and she desperately wants to play netball with her new friends but can’t catch the ball.
She is miserable until the coach makes her the manager of the team...and then she flourishes.

Simon just moved to Sydney from Melbourne with his mum, who works long hours as a lawyer. When he gets home from school their big apartment is empty and he feels very lonely, and misses his Dad who lives in America.

Outside of class as the netball season progresses, freedom takes on a new meaning for the four students when on the very day of the netball finals, Maha and her family face the very real prospect of deportation.
