Alternating between turn of the millennium New York City and revolutionary era Iran, The Other Son is the story of reclusive artist Sean Kildeer whose world begins to unravel after colliding with a beautiful pregnant woman in Central Park and of embryologist Khodadad Jal, who finds his demanding Shi’ite faith challenged by an even more demanding modern world.



After literally running into Maddy Selvascura, Sean is so enamored by the prospect of having met his soul-mate that he is willing to accept her quirkiness, her virginity, even the mysterious doctors who watch her behind tinted car windows, but when she tells him that she’s pregnant, things get complicated. Years earlier, following half a lifetime in which Dr. Khodadad Jal struggles to ally his Muslim faith with his scientific reasoning, he comes to realize that there is only one way to escape God’s will - he must surrender to it. Worlds collide in Sean’s apartment when Dr. Jal is forced to perform an emergency cesarean on Maddy to bring her peculiar baby into the world.

Flitting between past and future, this novel spans the events of 9/11, the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict, and examines the mind's struggle to ally faith with reason.
