Aprašymas

Perceptively and humorously written, The Mingham Air is a gentle and delightful novel of life and love in an English country village.
When Cecily Hutson invited her goddaughter, Hester Clifford, to leave London for Mingham, where she could recuperate in peace from pneumonia complicated by a broken heart, Cecily underestimated her young visitor. Pretty, chic, and strong-minded, Hester is not long at The End House--which is still the "End House" in Mingham, a town where the daily life goes on slowly in a nineteenth -century mood--before she finds much to reorganize there. Her cousins are charming, easy-going and indolent, Cecily, although a strong-minded artist and painter of romantic ruins, is an appallingly absent-minded wife and mother. Cousin Bennet, father of the household, has been allowed to draft into invalidism. Hester's two young cousins, Maggie and Derek, are content with feckless immaturity, although they are, as Hester, in their twenties.

Elizabeth Fair brings the whole village and its inhabitants to life with tolerance, laughter and kindness. She shows us Mrs. Hyde-Ridley, an ancient and doughty Edwardian relic, who controls village gossip and endeavors to maintain the social standards of her youth: Mrs. Merlin, the Rector's wife, who is heaven-bent on bringing the people of Mingham to a proper appreciation of the joys of country-dancing and recorder music (the people in her last parish were so keen) and the local landowner and recluse, Thomas Seamark, a rich and brooding young widower. Matchmaking, of course, is rife, and as usual, the results are quite unexpected.
From beginning to end, The Mingham Air is pre entertainment, presented skillfully and with great charm.
