Aprašymas
At Christmas, 1912, Mr Forster paid a short visit to the State of Dewas Senior in Central India, and in 1921 he spent six months there as temporary private secretary to the Maharajah and as a member of his court. Devi (pronounced "Davy"), which gives its name to the book, was the sacred hill overlooking the capital city, and the book itself, based largely on letters and diaries which he wrote at the time, describes as only Mr Forster could his experiences in a world where the fantastic would keep breaking in on everyday life. He found himself clerk of the works to a partly built New Palace, he was subjected to an Official Insult, and he must be one of the very few Europeans who have taken part in the eight-day festival of Gokul Ashtami. Through it all shines the kindly, tantalizing character of the Maharajah himself, "certainly a genius and possibly a saint, and he had to be a king".
