Aprašymas
Wang Chi-yang -- Old Master Wang -- is an unforgettable figure. Indomitable, proud, held in a web of culture thousands of years old, he refuses to recognize change or the Western World which swirls around him on Grant Avenue, in San Francisco's Chinatown.
Old Master Wang has two sons, Wang Ta and Wang San. For Wang San there are no problems of assimilation. At thirteen, he has almost forgotten his Chinese. But for the elder son, Wang Ta, assimilation becomes an excruciatingly difficult process. How can he reconcile the ideas of he patriarchal father - who still wears the old Chinese gowns, still demands his son's dependence, still insists on choosing his son's wife - with the new world he finds in the university and in medical school?
The stabilizing forces for the father and son are Wang Ta's "progressive" aunt and his scholarly, cynical college friend and, later, the women in his life.
Mr. Lee writes of the two worlds of Wang Ta from personal experience, and combines them in a novel of charm, with characterization and colorful background.
