Aprašymas
In 1971, John Hopkins wrote in his diary, "I need to go back to South America to reacquaint myself with the scene." Revisiting "the scene" would commence in late 1972 and continue through 1973, starting in Mexicali and heading - with his companion Madeleine van Breughal - southward. In The South American Diaries, Hopkins, nomad and novelist, blends shrewd insights with mordant wit as he endures the privations of self-exile, all the while reassessing what he is gaining from his travels. Similar to The Tangier Diaries, written during Hopkins's expat years in Tangier, the power of The South American Diaries lies in Hopkins's sharp eye and poetic intensity throughout: "The sun rises like a flare jutting out of the sky. I awoke blinded by the sun and covered with a greasy patina of perspiration that won't evaporate until sundown. Still reeling from last night's excesses, I staggered onto the balcony to look at the sea."
