The central tenet of this book is that at present traditional musical compositions and contemporary sonic output are approached and investigated through separate and distinct critical languages and histories. As a consequence, no continuous and comparative study of the field - as exists in literary studies for example - is possible.

Voegelin proposes an analytical framework that can access and investigate works across genres and times, and study them within a comparative context. As the discipline of sound studies gains momentum, Sonic Possible Worlds fills a need for a discourse of sound to contextualize and debate emerging sonic practices.
