The Iraq war, officially declared in March–April 2003, took place in the midst of a fierce controversy about the reasons for and the possible effects of the US/UK coalition’s decision to invade the country and abolish the Saddam Hussein regime. The legitimacy of the war and, consequently, a consensual view of what the international community is and wants to be were the two crucial stakes of the controversy. Another war, a symbolic one, has been raging around the military operations themselves. This war split the international community, including the European Union, and challenged the status of international institutions, such as the UN, in an unprecedented manner. It is this symbolic war that this book examines.
