Since 1997, the editors have been exploring together the idea of social justice and its impact in education and teacher education. Though we are colleagues from the same department, our collective search to understand the concept of social justice began in our work together on the Joint Commission on Social Justice in Teacher Education sponsored and supported by the Association of Teacher Educators and the National Council of the Social Studies. Under the leadership of professors, Rudolfo Chávez Chávez and Richard Diem, the commission invited several professors and teachers from across the United States to collectively investigate the meaning and practice of social justice in teacher education and education. From that experience, we have gained a deeper understanding of the complex nature of social justice and its relation to and practice within a democratic state further complicated by the structural inequalities marked by oppression.
