I hope to encourage Cruising Sailors to give thought as to how they can avoid and if unable, can prevail over a variety of unwanted and/or nefarious interference.
I speak from my military background and over forty years of yachting experience on both sides of the Atlantic, including several Blue Water passages and from eighteen years ‘living aboard’
The aim is to kindle interest in this subject by explaining the reason why one needs to know about Piracy and other forms of unwanted interference.
Several pages are devoted to simple tips which will help small boat sailors avoid becoming victims.
The development of a security plan for larger yachts is considered, together with ideas on how to determine and reduce the threat and risk of an incident. It then goes on to discuss the development and implementation of an effective security plan to Deter, Detect, Defend against and Defeat aggressors.
The pros and cons of carrying fire arms as part of a vessel’s security suite is discussed at length. This is followed by a description of several ‘Less that Lethal’ devices effective against all but the most resolute assailants.
When you cast off for that great adventure, confident that you have taken every reasonable measure to ensure your safety and success. Be sure that the possibility of nefarious interference has be included in your preparations.
