The disappearance of two teenage school girls and their teacher during a picnic at a prominent Victorian rock formation on Valentine's Day 1900 remains a mystery today. Intensive searches by men, bloodhounds and a tracker soon after they vanished, failed to find the missing women and rumours raged for years about what might have happened; murder, kidnap, or supernatural forces.

In January 2008 a team of archaeologists excavating on the flanks of that rugged volcanic peak unearthed a narrow slit in the back wall of a previously unknown rock shelter that gave access to a cavern, revealing more than ancient Aboriginal art, setting their team on a quest with unexpected results. The dark recess of the cavern at Hanging Rock gave up long held secrets raising new speculations about the mysterious disappearance of the young ladies from Appleyard College.
