Aprašymas
"Petals" provides a unique blend of fast-paced action and meaningful introspection, taking readers on a multigenerational journey through love, loss, soul-searching, addiction, recovery, joy, heartache, and forgiveness. At its core is a powerful statement on self-compassion and how each of us is more than the sum of our past experiences.
"Petals" stars Mary Turner, whom readers meet for the first time when she's born---the third and last child, and rather obviously her parents' least favorite. We follow Mary as she graduates from high school and falls in love, and we witness the birth of her first child, Scotty. We ache as we watch Mary struggle with motherhood and eventually turn to illegal drugs and alcohol to cope with her bipolar disorder diagnosis. And when Mary runs away from home one day, leaving her husband and neglected son behind with nothing more than a brief note, we feel angry at her impulsivity and selfishness. Through every step of Mary's journey, the reader is allowed an intimate and honest look into the innerworkings of her soul, even at her darkest and most painful moments amid the throes of addiction. Though Mary is far from guiltless in pain her family endured, readers can empathize with her, and, perhaps by extension, the people in their own lives struggling with mental illness, addiction, or dysfunctional relationships.
Also making "Petals" unique is its use of symbolism to tell its story. Braided through every fiber of the novel is the symbolic theme of the flower. Flowers and flower petals appear at nearly every junction in Mary's journey---sometimes in large ways, sometimes small---as a physical manifestation and representation of her struggle toward compassion, stability, and forgiveness. This theme adds a beautifully poetic tone to the story, making it an ideal read for lovers of verse and prose alike.
