This book introduces the link between the nervous system and animal behavior, without assuming any previous knowledge of neurophysiology. It does so by concentrating on specific case histories, in which it has been possible to establish a connection between a particular group of nerve cells and a particular pattern of behavior. Thus, each topic is introduced at an elementary level and yet is pursued in sufficient detail for the reader to gain a satisfying insight into how nervous systems generate behavior. This approach is intentionally quite different from that of conventional textbooks on neurobiology, and the emphasis here is on topics of particular interest in the context of behavior. The student beginning a study of nervous systems meets many unfamilar terms; in this book such terms are defined directly or by context when they first appear and are printed in bold type. The book also provides suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter.
