Aprašymas

Aldermaston might be called the Los Alamos of Great Britain, and was the object of numerous intelligence and counter-intelligence operations during the Cold War. Much early research in nuclear physics had been done in Great Britain and, after World War II, the British were determined to have their own nuclear deterrent. Aldermaston, an isolated RAF airfield in southern England, was selected as the principal site for British nuclear weapons development.

This lavishly illustrated book was produced in Britain in co-operation with Aldermaston's current management. The story begins with Britain's participation in the U.S. World War II atomic bomb program. The development of the Aldermaston site in rural England in the 1950s makes for intriguing reading. Aldermaston served as a base for British technicians who journeyed to Australia, the Pacific Islands, and the United States to conduct nuclear tests. The 1960s saw anti-nuclear protests, candidly described here. Recent years have brought a change to government/industry management of the site, as the emphasis has changed to the more peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
