It took nearly five years to complete the research on the topic: "Study of Information Systems and Networks in India: with special reference to Maharashtra". A number of changes were made in the thesis after its approval for bringing in the form of the book. In this book only Information Systems and Networks in India as a whole is covered and rest of the portion of Information Centers pertaining to Maharashtra would be brought out as a separate book. The first chapter describes brief introduction about information systems and networks in India. It includes the reason for selecting the topic, objectives of the study, scope and limitations, research methodology and hypotheses of the study. The second chapter deals with the review of literature form 1960 to 2008 including articles in periodicals, books, online journals, LISA and internet etc. Thematic presentation of the review of literature is done. It includes the review of literature on Information Systems, Information Networks, Library Consortia, Open Access and Institutional Repository. Chapter three deals with an overview of Library and Information Systems/Centers in India. Chapter four describes major Library and Information Networks in India which include Metropolitan Area Networks, Subject Specialized Networks and General Networks in India. The fifth chapter deals with analysis and interpretations. This chapter has been presented in two parts. Analysis of Websites of Selected Information Systems in India Analysis of Websites of Selected Subject Specialized Networks and Metropolitan Area Networks in India The last chapter presents the major findings, conclusion of the study. It also includes the testing of hypotheses and further areas of research are identified and by products of the study are enumerated.
