In 1820, Indianapolis became the state capital of Indiana. The original plan called for a city of only one square mile, at the center of which sat Governor's Circle, a large circular commons that was home to the governor's mansion; however, no Indiana governor ever lived there. The mansion quickly gained a haunted reputation and was eventually demolished in 1857. Today, the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, a 284-foot-tall memorial, stands in its place. This centerpiece was built to commemorate Indiana's Civil War Veterans, as three out of every four eligible Hoosiers served in the war. The tallest Civil War monument in America, it is considered haunted and acts as the epicenter of all Indianapolis ghost stories today. The spirits of the city, like the streets leading to the monument itself, radiate outwards like the spokes of a ghostly wheel spinning tales of legend, mystery, and intrigue.
