Hannie Richards leads a double life - one as a wife and mother in a Devon manor house, the other as an international smuggler. Between trips she recounts her adventures at the Hope Club, a notorious women-only version of the Garrick or the Reform.

Virtuous Hannie is not: she wants it all - luxury, excitement, love, security. Perhaps she pays a price for it, for something goes terribly wrong and Hannie loses her cool - with disastrous consequences. Certainly she discovers that juggling the demands of home and work is no easier for an international smuggler than for any other woman of our time.
