The book recounts the dramatic events that took place in Westchester County, N.Y., in the summer of 1781 when Generals Washington and Rochambeau designed the strategy that won American independence. The events surrounding their strategic decision took many surprising twists and turns and were of great consequence to the fate of our nation, yet are still too little known.

The allied generals decided to risk a march of more than 400 miles, from the Hudson River to the Chesapeake region of Virginia. There, with the help of the French fleet, Washington and Rochambeau hoped to trap Lord Cornwallis's British and Hessian forces at Yorktown.

Washington risked all on this march. Its success required the utmost secrecy, and he prepared an elaborate deception to convince the British that Manhattan, not Virginia, was the target of the allied armies.
