Florida was the third Southern state to secede, and some fifteen thousand Floridians fought in the Civil War. Florida also contributed 1,500 miles of unprotected shoreline to the war effort, creating a perfect haven for blockade runners. As the war raged on, hundreds of Union ships patrolled the coasts, seizing Rebel ships and confiscating cargoes. Conversely, Confederate ships were unfettered by the need to defend fixed positions or occupy territories and were free to roam the high seas, preying on isolated victims. Although the Union navy never completely severed the smuggling routes into Florida, it significantly curtailed them.
