This work of fiction is a story of metamorphosis that explores, via the historical record, how three Englishmen from the seventeenth century lent their name to Indians, Africans, Americans, philanderers, outlaws, lawmen, revolutionaries, rustlers, planters, rebels, preachers and gin soaked Californians.

Although this is a work of fiction, most of the characters and events are taken from the historical record. Sometime in the middle of the 17th century three men named Skipper arrived in the new world. One married an Indian and became a chief. He and his descendants absconded with servant girls, amassed large plantations, sued and were sued, rebelled against the Governor, rustled hogs, were hung as Tory sympathizers, fought in the Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and along the way committed a few acts of indiscretion. This is the first in what is hoped to be a series of glimpses into the genealogy of this family and the motivation behind the real historical events.
