The present volume was planned to honour the memory of a great-scientist Late (Prof.) P.N. Mehra who had immensely contributed to the field of plant cytogenetics. His contributions are finding place in the numerous volumes in the libraries all over the world. The volume includes articles written by his students and admirers who in themselves are recognised in their own field of work. Although most of the articles are on structure and function of chromosomes, there are some which are from allied areas. The publication of this volume has been possible due to the encouragements the editors received, from Prof. T.N. Kapoor, Vice Chancellor - Panjab University, and Prof. G.P. Sharma, Eminent Scientist - De ptt. of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Thanks are due to the students of RCS who had been directly or indirectly helpful in bringing out this volume.
