Moving from the development of the atomic bomb during the Second World War to the Cold War and the advent of the hydrogen bomb, Churchill and the Bomb explores Winston Churchill's changing relationship with and views on nuclear weapons. Kevin Ruane explains how Churchill went from regarding the bomb as a weapon of war to seeing it as a weapon for keeping the peace.

While other studies of Churchill and the Second World War touch upon the nuclear bomb, there has until now been no dedicated and sustained treatment of the topic. By the end of the Second World War Churchill's place in history as a man of war was secure, but during the onset of the Cold War his steadily growing fear of nuclear weapons brought about a desire for peace. His quest to bring about an 'easement' in East-West tensions took on added urgency with the advent of the hydrogen bomb in 1953. Though he ultimately failed to achieve this, the story of Churchill's nuclear obsession is a compelling one with important contemporary resonances.

Drawing extensively on a range of primary and secondary sources, this book offers a fresh insight on a key phase of Churchill's long career.
