The diaries cover the period from November 1914 through the last day of May 1915. Burgoyne was wounded in May 1915 and invalided back to England. He went on to join the Royal College of Heralds and became Cork Pursuivant of Arms. Burgoyne was killed in 1936 during a raid by Italian aircraft on the Red Cross convoy he was escorting through Ethiopia. His daughter discovered the diaries in a trunk years later.
