Branch research stations fulfill a critical role in the success of agricultural research. The idea for the need for multiple research sites to take advantage of a range of soil types, environmental conditions and differing crop/animal enterprises was recognized early in the development of agricultural research (well before passage of the Hatch Act of 1887). In the future, successful branch research stations will require individuals with a unique skill set in new, innovative technology along with a sound knowledge of production agriculture.
