Aprašymas

"In this world, shipmates, sin that pays its way can travel freely, and without a passport; whereas virtue, if a pauper, is stopped at all frontiers." -Herman Melville, Moby Dick

This is the first book in the Karl Standt crime novel series, which includes Gone On Kauai and the upcoming Compulsion.

Barbarous Coasts is a tale of stratospheric thievery and corruption, set against a man's struggle for a clean conscience and the truth. It takes place in Manhattan's Midtown and other iconic NYC neighborhoods, as well as in Europe and the Middle East.

In the novel, the seasoned NYPD detective Karl Standt forms an offbeat alliance with a talented, paroled hacker ("Church"). What ensues is a fast-moving, multilayered tableau depicting the sharp end of contemporary America.

"Standt made it to Le Parker Meridien on West 56th Street by 9:30 a.m. He met his partner McElroy at the hotel entrance, a big square stone enclosure with softly lit glass panels.

A humid, frenzied gridlock reigned. Horns blared, cab drivers went ballistic, a big delivery truck idled with no place to go, filling the stagnant air with acrid diesel smoke, the driver half hanging out of the cab trying to see what was going on. Two squad cars were double parked near the hotel entrance.

The four NYPD patrolmen had strung some yellow tape around the landing zone, where the smashed remains lay under a protective tarp. The sidewalk contained dark crimson blotches and the warm air was thick with a meaty blood smell.

A baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, staying in the hotel, had seen the body fall and strike the pavement. He stood off to the side where the sun intruded upon the building's shadows, a tall, angular Hispanic man with a perfect V-shaped physique, broad shoulders, and casual country-club attire."

Barbarous Coasts is an engrossing tale of a detective grappling with a far-flung case of financial chicanery and Banana Republic-style elitism.
