The Whittakers' daughter Delaney is born during the devastating winter that follows, virtually ending the dreams of easy fortune in the American West. In the bleak aftermath of catastrophe, the Whittakers recoup, buying up much of the cheap land and cattle abandoned by departing ranchers. As Wyoming attains statehood, a son Chandler is born and the future looks bright until the menace of rustling escalates. Damien joins an Invasion of fellow cattlemen against the thieves and most of the most ruthless are killed. Imprisoned, Damien awaits trial and possible hanging. He and Harper face a future so perilous, it will require all their courage to survive.
